Turku Åbo 1827
Experience Turku’s lost city centre!
About the exhibition
Welcome to Turku in 1827! The Great Fire of Turku in September 1827 destroyed much of the medieval city, and only a few buildings have survived to this day. Take a virtual walk through the city’s streets and along the banks of the River Aura, and experience Turku as it was before the fire. In the alleys of Luostarinmäki, you can explore a suburban residential area and discover what life was like 200 years ago.
This large-scale study, based on fire insurance documents, architectural drawings and historical descriptions of the city, comes to life in a 360° city tour built from a detailed 3D model. What was Turku like before the fire? Join us on a journey through time.
