About the exhibition

Mehen (2024), is an online gamelike artwork by Joonas Hyvönen (b. 1990), and it is inspired by an ancient Egyptian board game, which is interpreted as being related to death and funerals. The game has thought to take the player to the afterlife and back at the moment of death, symbolising rebirth. The exact rules of the game are not known, but its significance is based on archaeological discoveries, including ancient tomb paintings. In Hyvönen’s work, the player navigates a world of abandoned user accounts, on a mission to find a path through the digital afterlife.

Mehen was commissioned for the Kiasma exhibition Feels Like Home and will become part of the Finnish National Gallery’s art collection. Museum visitors will receive a free link to the work during the exhibition. The exhibition Feels Like Home investigates belonging from a variety of perspectives: How do people connect with each other and their environment? The experience of belonging can also be marked by nostalgia for the past or for a place that has been left behind.
